Have you been injured by the drug Avastin? On November 18, 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that it has revoked approval of Avastin in the treatment of breast cancer[1]. While not a recall, effectively this decision will cause medical providers to stop prescribing Avastin for patients with breast cancer. FDA issued the decision with a press release that sets the stage for claims by breast cancer patients who failed to receive effective treatment. These victims may be entitled to compensation for their losses resulting from that treatment's failure to treat their breast cancer.

Avastin (bevacizumab), manufactured by Genentech, Inc., was approved by the FDA in 2008 for the treatment of breast cancer. However, new studies now show that Avastin is not only ineffective in treating breast cancer, but also carries serious risks. Patients who chose Avastin as a breast cancer treatment may have suffered serious injuries and side effects. Studies prove that extremely serious side effects can be linked to Avastin, such as :

  • Severe hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Hemorrhaging, bleeding and blood loss
  • Cardiac problems, including heart attack and heart failure
  • Perforations (tears or holes) in the nose, stomach, and intestines

The FDA has revoked its approval for Avastin for breast cancer because the risk of serious injuries that Avastin can cause outweighs any negligible benefit it may provide. (Avastin is still approved for the treatment of other types of cancers, including cancer of the lung, kidney, colon and brain.)

If you or somebody you care for is currently taking Avastin, contact your doctor right away. Do not discontinue taking any medication without consulting your physician.
