Effexor is a popular antidepressant manufactured by the Pfizer company. Although primarily prescribed to treat major depressive disorder, Effexor is also used to treat migranes and diabetic neuropathy.
Like many anti-depressants, Effexor carries the risk of increased suicidal tendencies in people under the age of 25. The Federal Drug Administration requires Effexor to include a tough "black box" warning about the risk of increased suicidal tendencies in young people. There is also a significant increase in the risk of birth defects when taking Effexor during pregnancy. Like many other drugs in its category, Effexor has been linked to heart birth defects in newborn babies as well as persistent primary hypertension.
However, the FDA also requires the makers of Effexor to warn patients about yet another risk. Effexor should not be taken with any Monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) drug or if any MAOI drug has been taken by the patient in the last 14 days because of the risk of a serious, sometimes fatal, drug interaction.
MAOIs are powerful antidepressants used to treat depression where many other drugs have failed. When combined with Effexor, serious side effects can include:
- involuntary tremors, jerking or twitching of muscles
- excessive sweating
- nausea and vomiting
- flushing (sudden redness of the skin)
- dizziness or fainting
- fever
- delirium
- muscle rigidity
- seizures
- rapid fluctuations of vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature
- extreme anxiety or agitation
- coma
- death
Please consult your physician before discontinuing any medication.
