Lexapro (escitalopram)
Lexapro is a widely prescribed Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant manufactured by Forest Labs. Lexapro is associated with a number of dangerous, even deadly, health risks.
Birth defects associated with Lexapro
- Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHN) is a life-threatening lung condition apparent soon after birth. PPHN babies cannot get enough oxygen into their bloodstream. This can cause heart failure, seizures, organ failure, hearing loss, brain damage, kidney damage, shock and even death.
Suicide--Research by the FDA shows that people under the age of 25 who take antidepressants have a higher risk of suicide than do adults [1] . In response, FDA requires the labels of antidepressants used by children must include a tough "black box" warning about the risk of increased suicidal tendencies in young people. Such warnings are used to signal extremely serious side effects for a prescription drug.
Most antidepressants have never been specifically approved for use in children and adolescents who suffer from depression. Nevertheless, they are regularly prescribed to young persons.
If you, your child or loved one has been injured by Lexapro, the manufacturer may have failed in its duty to design, make, inspect and label the product appropriately.
In 2008, the New England Journal of Medicine published a study showing that SSRI manufacturers engaged in a practice called “publication bias. ” Publication bias happens when drug makers suppresses or misrepresent negative studies about a drug. This leaves doctors and patients with a distorted view of how well an antidepressant really works. Lexapro was one of the drugs in the study. Forest Labs did not publish a negative study about Lexapro, increasing the positive impression of Lexapro by 16% .
