Neurological Disorder Linked To Reflux Drug Reglan: The FDA has linked long-term or high-dosage use of the acid reflux medication Reglan to a serious condition known as tardive dyskinesia .
Reglan is the brand name for the drug metoclopramide. It is prescribed to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease, diabetic gastroparesis and delayed gastric diseases. It is marketed under the brand names:
- Reglan Tablets
- Reglan Oral Disintegrating Tablets
- Metoclopramide Oral Solution
- Reglan Injection.
Although Reglan is recommended only for up to three months of use, 20% of users take it for longer periods. The FDA has found that long-term Reglan use is the most common cause of drug-induced movement disorders, even after the patient stops taking Reglan . Tardive dyskinesia is a syndrome of jerky, involuntary movements that affects the tongue, face, mouth or jaw. The symptoms of tardive dyskinesia include repetitive and purposeless movements, such as:
- Grimacing
- Lip smacking
- Puckering or pursing of the lips
- Rapid eye blinking
- Rapid movement of extremities
- Impaired movement of the fingers.
