Patients taking these drugs had between 1.6 to 1.7 times the risk of death . As a result, Seroquel is "contraindicated" (not allowed) for elderly patients suffering from dementia.

The FDA has found a risk of hyperglycemia (diabetes, high blood sugar) and weight gain with all forms of Seroquel in all patient populations . Diabetes can be a very serious disease. It can cause serious long-term complications, such as heart disease, kidney failure and blindness. Without treatment, it can even cause death. Signs and symptoms of high blood sugar or diabetes might include:
- Excessive urination
- Intense thirst
- Dry mouth
- Extreme hunger
- Severe fatigue
- Irritability
- Blurry vision,
- Unusual or inexplicable weight loss / gain,
- Poor wound healing
- Impotence
- Recurrent infections.
