The FDA released the results of 17 studies, which found that elderly patients who have dementia and are treated with atypical antipsychotics, such as Seroquel, are at an increased risk of death. Patients taking these drugs had between 1.6 to 1.7 times the risk of death . As a result, Seroquel is "contraindicated" (not allowed) for elderly patients suffering from dementia.
Diabetes & Hyperglycemia
The FDA has found a risk of hyperglycemia (diabetes, high blood sugar) and weight gain with all forms of Seroquel in all patient populations . Diabetes can be a very serious disease. It can cause serious long-term complications, such as heart disease, kidney failure and blindness. Without treatment, it can even cause death. Signs and symptoms of high blood sugar or diabetes might include:
- Excessive urination
- Intense thirst
- Dry mouth
- Extreme hunger
- Severe fatigue
- Irritability
- Blurry vision,
- Unusual or inexplicable weight loss / gain,
- Poor wound healing
- Impotence
- Recurrent infections.
