If you have taken Tysabri and you have suffered from brain damage you may be entitled to compensation.
Tysabri is manufactured by Biogen IDEC and Elan. It is prescribed to treat Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Crohn's disease. It has been marketed under the following names:
- Tysabri
- Antegren
- Natalizumabis (the generic name)
Tysabri is taken intravenously. Since its approval in 2004, Tysabri has been linked to a rare and often fatal brain disorder called “progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy” (PML). PML is caused by a common virus in the central nervous system, Polyomavirus JC. Polyomavirus JC usually remains dormant in most people but can become active in people who have compromised immune-systems. As a result, PML is seen most frequently in AIDS patients .
PML causes severe brain damage and even death. For non-AIDS individuals, PML is usually fatal. 80 percent of the patients die. Those who do survive are usually left with serious neurological disabilities , including:
- Mental deterioration
- Blindness or vision loss
- Coma
- Seizures
- Muscle weakness
- Difficulty swallowing
- Speech difficulties
- Cognitive difficulties
- Hemiplegia (paralysis on one side of the body)
Recently a new risk was discovered, compelling the FDA to update the label for Tysabri . People who have taken certain immunosuppressant drugs prior to using Tysabri are also at risk of developing PML if they use Tysabri. These immunosuppressant drugs include:
- Mitoxantrone
- Azathioprine
- Methotrexate
- Cyclophosphamide
- Mycophenolate
If you or a loved one is taking Tysabri, contact your physician with any questions and concerns you might have. Please consult your physician before discontinuing any medication.
