If you have taken Xenical and have developed liver damage or other problems, you may be entitled to compensation.
Liver failure
Xenical is a prescription form of the weight loss drug orlistat, manufactured in the United States by Roche Pharmaceuticals. In August 2009, the FDA announced that it was investigating reports of liver problems and liver failure associated with Xenical. The FDA had received at least 32 reports of severe liver problems associated with Xenical and Alli, an over-the-counter orlistat drug. Of those 32 patients, 27 required hospitalization and 6 suffered liver failure, a life-threatening condition that requires urgent medical care .
Xenical works by inhibiting the absorption of fat during the digestive process, thereby reducing the absorption of calories. This method also inhibits the absorption of essential fat-soluble vitamins and nutrients, such as vitamins A, D, E, K and beta-carotene. According to the manufacturer and federal drug officials, Xenical patients must take daily vitamin supplements to avoid potentially dangerous vitamin and nutrient deficiencies.
In 2010, the FDA approved new labeling for Xenical, warning patients to look for signs of liver failure. Signs of liver failure can include:
- Brown urine
- Loss of appetite
- Abdominal pain
- Vomiting
- Stomach pain
- Weakness
- Jaundice (the yellowing of the skin or eyes.)
Other side effects of Xenical include:
- Hives
- Rash
- Itching
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Severe or continuous abdominal pain
- Pain or discomfort in the rectum
- Stomach pain
- Irregular menstrual periods
- Gas with oily spotting
- Urgent need to have a bowel movement
- Loose stools
- Oily or fatty stools
- Increased number of bowel movements
- Difficulty controlling bowel movements
