Airbags are essential vehicle safety equipment. We trust them to protect us and our loved ones during a car or vehicle accident. Unfortunately, because of defective airbags, serious injury or death can occur.

If you get hurt because of an airbag defect in your automobile or vehicle, you may have a products liability case against the manufacturer, distributor, or even the retailer of the airbag. Even though the manufacturer of the vehicle did not cause the collision, it can still be held liable if a defective airbag increased the severity of the injuries you otherwise would have received from the accident.

Improper Airbag Deployment

Some airbags have been known to deploy when the driver starts the vehicle or while they are just driving. In both cases, severe injuries often result. Once an airbag deploys, deflation begins immediately as the gas escapes through vent holes in the fabric. Airbags are supposed to be fully inflated before the passenger falls into it during a crash. Serious injuries occur when airbags, which can travel at speeds up to 175- 200 mph, hit occupants prior to full inflation.

Other types of airbag defects include:

  • Overly aggressive airbags - those that deploy too fast and too far into the occupant space, causing severe head injuries, brain damage and partial or complete decapitation.
  • Oversized airbags - those that are too large and deploy too far into the occupant space, resulting in the same injuries as above.
  • Untethered airbags - those that break loose from their holdings, causing injuries to occupants.
  • Low deployment threshold airbags - airbags deploy in a low-speed crash, causing injuries to occupants they would not have experienced had the airbag not deployed.
  • System malfunctions - occur when a defective electrical system or sensors cause an airbag to deploy, either on ignition, or when the car hits a pothole. System malfunctions can also result in an airbag failing to deploy.
  • Failure to deploy-- an airbag fails to deploy when it should have.
  • Late deployment--the airbag deploys too late and does not protect the occupants.
