The FDA has announced that saline and silicone gel-filled breast implants may be connected to a rare but very serious form of cancer, called anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL)[1]. According to the FDA, women with breast implants "may have a very small but significant risk of ALCL in the scar capsule adjacent to the implant."
Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL)
ALCL is rare form of non-Hodgkins lymphoma and can appear anywhere in the body. However, ALCL is typically located in the:
- Lymph nodes
- Skin
- Bones
- Soft tissue
- Lungs
- Liver
ALCL is not a form of breast cancer. In women with breast implants, however, ALCL has been found in the scar capsule surrounding the breast implant, not in the breast tissue itself. The "scar capsule" is a lining of tissue and fluid surrounding the implant. It is formed by the body as a reaction to the implant.
Women with implants who had ALCL in the scar capsule experienced the following symptoms:
- Persistent swelling near the implant
- Pain near the implant.
These symptoms did not show up until years after the implant surgery had taken place.
