Enfamil Newborn Formula Lawsuit
Possible Link to Infant Death in Missouri
Retail giant Walmart recalled baby formula Enfamil this week after the death on Sunday of a Missouri infant. The formula manufacturer, Mead Johnson Nutrition, claims that the batch in question tested negative for the deadly Cronobacter bacteria. Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services noted that it is unclear whether the boy's death was caused by contamination in the formula or some other source. Another child was hospitalized with the same type of bacterial infection, and had been given the same type of newborn formula.
The newborn powder formula comes in a 12.5 ounce canister and has the lot number ZP1K7G on the bottom of the can. The manufacturer claims that the batch tested negative for the bacteria, and so they are not issuing a recall. Walmart stores will remove the product from shelves pending further investigation of the infant's death.
Parents of newborn infants should be alert for any changes in their baby's health, especially these symptoms of Cronobacter infection:
- Poor feeding response
- Irritability
- Jaundice
- Grunting while breathing
- Unstable body temperature
This type of infection can turn into meningitis, an inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. Signs of meningitis in newborns include:
- High fever
- Constant crying
- Excessive sleepiness or sluggishness
- A bulge in the soft spot atop the baby's head
- Stiffness in the neck
- Seizures
With proper treatment, children can recover from these serious infections, but it is critical that parents seek medical help immediately.
