National Public Radio recently looked into allegations that packaged cups of noodles are dangerously designed. Dr. Warren Garner, director of the burn unit at the University of Southern California's County Hospital, spoke to NPR[1] about what he calls a "uniquely troublesome product."
Dr. Garner explained that instant cups of noodles are dangerous because the cups are typically tall, light and have an unstable base. This design flaw allows them to tip over very easily. Toddlers are most at risk for accidentally pulling the hot soup onto them selves, causing very serious burns.
Not only are the containers dangerous for holding hot liquids, the noodles themselves contribute to the severity of the burns. Noodles hold heat longer than liquid and they stick to the skin. This allows the noodles to cause deeper and more serious burns[2]. Dr. Garner told NPR that, in his practice, one in five children with noodle burns need surgery.
