AMO Moisture Plus Contact Lens Solution

Did You Know?

Moisture Plus Multi-Purpose Solution has been linked to a rare eye infection.

On May 26, 2007, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) began warning the public to throw away AMO Complete Moisture Plus Multi-Purpose Solution, a product used for cleaning and storing soft contact lenses. An investigation by the CDC and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) linked the product to a rare eye infection.

The solution was immediately and voluntarily recalled by its manufacturer, Advanced Medical Optics Inc., of Santa Ana, California.

Use of the solution was linked to a rare, stubborn and painful eye infection called Acanthamoeba keratitis, which is caused by an amoeba. If left untreated, the infection could cause permanent vision loss or complete blindness. Acanthamoeba keratitis affects only one or two people per million, but a Chicago ophthalmologist noticed more than a dozen cases of the infection and alerted the CDC. Currently, 138 confirmed cases are being investigated by the CDC and the FDA.

If you have AMO Complete Moisture Plus Multi-Purpose Solution, immediately discontinue using the solution, your current contact lenses and the lens storage case. Then, ask your doctor about choosing an appropriate alternative cleaning/disinfecting product and seek immediate treatment if you have symptoms of eye infection as early diagnosis is important for effective treatment. The symptoms of Acanthamoeba keratitis include:

  • Eye pain or redness
  • Blurred vision
  • Light sensitivity
  • Sensation of something in the eye
  • Excessive tearing

Three days after voluntarily recalling its contact lens solution, Advanced Medical Optics Inc. says it stands by its product, and blamed improper handling of contact lenses for the eye infections that forced the product to be pulled from the shelves. The company president said the infection affects people who improperly handle contact lenses, such as disinfecting them with water or wearing them while swimming or showering.

However, CDC officials said they drew a link between the Advanced Medical Optics product and the infection because 58 percent of confirmed cases who wore soft contact lenses had used the solution in the month before onset of symptoms, and 39 percent had used only that solution. The CDC calculated that wearers of soft contact lenses who had the infection were at least seven times more likely to have used AMO Complete Moisture Plus than healthy people who wear soft contact lenses.

The association between the product and the infection was clear-cut, CDC officials said.
