The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) outlines hours of service regulations to reduce the amount of problems caused due to fatigue. Sleep deprivation impairs a driver's ability to drive safely, and according to the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, driver fatigue is a probable factor in 20-40 percent of truck accidents. In order to get around the rules, some companies may falsify log books and other paperwork that is intended to track compliance with HOS regulations.
