Patients in the FDA study using this class of drugs were found to have a marked increase in risk of death, however the incidence was much higher in African-American patients included in the study. Serevent is a twice-daily used aerosol spray that opens the bronchial airways of asthma patients and enables them to breathe more easily.  However, a GlaxoSmithKline sponsored study of the drug was cut short because the data collected showed that three times more asthmatics using Serevent or Advair died of asthma than asthma patients who used other medications or a placebo.  Researchers also say that African-Americans are disproportionately affected and that patients who use Serevent should also use a companion medication to control inflammation.

Serevent was one of several prescription drugs singled out as having unaddressed safety issues in a Nov.18, 2004 Senate Finance Committee hearing. David Graham, the Office of Drug Safety, Associate Director for Science, stated that Serevent "has the unfortunate property that, I believe at least, it increases the risk of somebody that has asthma dying because of their asthma." The FDA advises that patients currently taking Serevent should not discontinue their treatment without first consulting a physician. Abruptly stopping this medication may result in life-threatening acutely deteriorating asthma control.
