Seroquel Lawsuits Side Effect Information
Seroquel Users: (Generic Name: Quetiapine Fumarate)
Seroquel is an oral prescription medication, meant to be taken in pill form. A dibenzothiazepine derivative, manufactured by AstraZeneca (originally approved by the FDA in 1997), the prescription drug was specifically defined and marketed as an atypical antipsychotic medicine. The drug is typically used to treat:
- Symptoms of schizophrenia;
- Seroquel may also be used alone, or with lithium or divalproex, to treat acute manic episodes in adults who have a condition called Bipolar I disorder.
Seroquel has also been prescribed off-label for many less severe psychological disorders and for disorders in children.
Recent studies seem to indicate that the prescription medication Seroquel may have serious side effects and could pose a health risk to particular individuals and groups, and may cause blood sugar disorders (e.g, diabetes) or pancreatitis. Links between Seroquel and diabetes and panceatitis are currently under investigation.
Seroquel is in the class of drugs called atypical antipsychotics, which are a newer class of antipsychotics touted as having a lower incidence of blood sugar disorders than the older medications such as Haldol and Thorazine. However, after Seroquel, and other drugs in the class, were approved and used by millions of patients, studies suggest that Seroquel could elevate the risk of developing diabetes.
"Data from a study to be reported at a weekend medical conference in Philadelphia showed patients on Seroquel had 3.34 times as many cases of diabetes as those on older drugs, the Wall Street Journal reported." -- www.msnbc.com (8/22/03)
