The FDA has issued several warnings regarding the osteoporosis medicine Fosamax. Studies have shown links to serious side effects. One risk is related to the tendency of patients taking this medicine to have irritation and damage to their esophagus. The manufacturer urges patients to take many precautions to minimize this danger, such as sitting or standing upright for long periods after taking a dose, and not taking the drug just before bedtime. Another risk is related to irregularities in bone growth such as osteonecrosis and increased risk of bone fractures.
Is your osteoporosis medicine increasing your risk of esophageal cancer ?
The FDA issued a Safety Announcement on July 21, 2011 indicating some concerns about Fosamax based on a recently published study. The study indicated that in one group of patients, there was an increased incidence of esophageal cancer in patients using Fosamax for 3 years or longer. The FDA encourages patients to consider the risks and benefits of this drug. If you have concerns, you should discuss the FDA announcement with your physician.
If you have taken Fosamax and developed esophageal cancer, you may be entitled to compensation.
Is your osteoporosis medicine putting you at risk of osteonecrosis (“bone death”) ?
The drug Fosamax is manufactured by Merck & Company. It is prescribed primarily to post-menopausal women to prevent osteoporosis and Paget’s disease. Fosamax has been linked to a very serious and painful condition known as osteonecrosis, or “bone death.” Osteonecrosis occurs when the jawbone fails to heal after minor trauma, such as a tooth extraction. The bone becomes infected and fractured, rotting out the jaw over time until the dead bone tissue must be surgically removed.
Symptoms of bone death in the jaw include:
- Pain
- Swelling
- Exposed bone
- Infection of the gums
- Loosening of the teeth
- Poor healing of the gums
- Numbness or a feeling of heaviness in the jaw
Is your osteoporosis medicine putting you at risk of fractures ?
Fosamax has also been linked with an increase in fractures of the thigh bone, or femur. This is usually the strongest bone in the body and the reported problems have prompted the FDA to issue a new safety warning about the drug in October of 2010.
If you have taken Fosamax and suffered from osteonecrosis or from an unexpected fracture, you may be entitled to compensation. Please consult your physician before discontinuing any medication.
