If you have used Yaz / Yasmin/Ocella/BeYaz and have suffered from blood clots or a stroke you may be entitled to compensation.
Yaz/Yasmin/Ocella/BeYaz (drosperinone & ethinyl estradiol) are hormonal contraceptives administered orally to prevent pregnancy. The FDA has also approved the drugs for treatment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder and moderate acne.
In August 2009, research was released indicating the progestin used in Yaz brings an increased risk of potentially deadly blood clots. Yaz and Yasmin use a unique form of progestin called drosperinone that has been linked to an increased risk of dangerous blood clots. European researches reported findings in August 2009 that women taking oral contraceptives containing drosperinone faced a 6.3 times greater risk of blood clots.
Blood clots pose a potentially life threatening risk because they can travel through the body’s circulatory system and cause:
- Brain damage
- Pulmonary embolism
- Heart attack
- Heart failure
- Deep vein thrombosis
The progestin in Yaz and Yasmin can also cause hyperkalemia, an elevated level of potassium in the blood. In severe cases, hyperkalemia can cause cardiac arrhythmia and sudden death.
The FDA warned Bayer that its commercials minimized the “serious risks associated with use of the drug.” Additionally, the commercials suggested Yaz could be used to treat symptoms of Premenstrual Syndrome, a treatment which was not granted approval by the FDA .
In 2010, Bayer finally agreed to spend $20 million dollars in advertising to correct its misleading statements . However, even those advertisements have been criticized as downplaying the risks associated with Yaz.
The health risks associated with Yaz and Yasmin are serious. Blood clots and hyperkalemia can both produce life-changing injuries and require extended hospitalization. Medical expenses for treatment of these conditions can be enormous.
