What is Erb’s Palsy? What Causes Erb’s Palsy?
Erb’s Palsy is a type of birth injury that damages the nerves of the shoulder and elbow muscles. When a baby’s shoulder becomes “stuck” behind the mother’s pubic bone, doctors must ease the baby out – but the process can cause nerve damage, which may or may not be permanent[1].
The nerve damage can cause a lack of muscle control, a lack of sensation or even paralysis. The majority of cases occur during birth as a result of forcible traction during delivery.
What Are the Symptoms of Erb’s Palsy
Symptoms of Erb’s palsy can include:
- No muscle control and no feeling in the arm or hand
- The ability to move but with little control
- The use of hands but not of the shoulder or elbow
- Paralysis of the entire arm with the hand and fingers hanging limp
- Facial paralysis on the affected side
- The inability to sit up without assistance
- The inability to crawl without the use of therapeutic devices
The therapeutic devices and therapy for Erb’s palsy can be expensive. When Erb’s palsy has occurred because of malpractice or negligence, parents and children have rights. If your child has Erb’s Palsy caused by the mistake of a medical provider, you may be entitled to file a claim.
