1 Sister Killed, Another Injured in Hit-and-Run Accident on I-170

A car accident on a suburban St. Louis interstate killed a 13-year-old girl and badly injured her sister, a 16-year-old girl who was driving. The car that allegedly caused the four-vehicle accident fled the scene, and the Missouri Highway Patrol is searching for its driver.
The girls were driving north on I-170 in Bel-Ridge, Missouri the afternoon of Oct. 8. As they neared Natural Bridge Road around 4:20 p.m. another northbound vehicle, a blue Mazda Tribute, struck the girls’ car and sent it into the cable barrier in the highway’s median. The Nissan Maxima driven by the 16-year-old spun into the southbound side of the interstate and collided with a Chevy Blazer. A fourth vehicle then crashed into the Blazer.
Both sisters were badly injured in the accident. The 13-year-old passed away at the scene. The older sister suffered broken bones in both her arms and broke her pelvis in four places. She was taken to St. Louis Children’s Hospital, where she was listed in good condition as of Oct. 9, despite her serious injuries. Officials at her high school said family members had told them she may have to spend two months in the hospital recuperating.
The driver of the Blazer, a 36-year-old Florissant woman, was also seriously injured and was taken to Barnes-Jewish Hospital for treatment.
The Mazda drove off before authorities could arrive to the scene of the accident. Troopers said the car was blue and should have damage on its driver’s side.
