An 18-year-old man was killed on Aug. 14 when a pickup truck struck his motorized scooter from behind on a highway in southeast Missouri. The truck driver fled the scene shortly after the accident, but police say they have some evidence to go on in their search for the person responsible.
The victim, a resident of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, was reportedly riding his motorized scooter southbound on Highway 142 the evening of Aug. 14. He was around three miles south of town when he slowed his vehicle to make a right turn around 9:50 p.m. As he braked, a vehicle came up from behind and struck him. The 18-year-old died of his injuries at the scene, according to the Butler County deputy coroner.
According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper, witnesses driving on the highway saw the driver of the other vehicle drive away from the accident scene after hesitating a moment. It is unlikely the person driving the larger vehicle did not realize what had happened, the trooper said. Authorities believe the vehicle that struck the victim was a dark blue pickup truck, based on physical evidence left behind. The trooper said that the truck they are looking for probably has some minor front end damage.
Much of the wreckage from the accident was still on the road the morning of Aug. 15, when the highway patrol sent in an accident reconstruction team to begin an investigation. Anyone with information about the accident or the whereabouts of the pickup truck was urged to contact the highway patrol.
