I’m sure you have heard of the St. Louis based company, Monsanto. Well, with big companies, come big risks. Monsanto is an agrochemical and agricultural biotechnology corporation. Headquartered in Creve Coeur, Greater St. Louis, Missouri. Monsanto developed Roundup, a glyphosate-based herbicide in the 1970s, and became a major producer of genetically engineered crops.
There was recently a legal battle in California that resulted in the plaintiff receiving $237 million dollars in damages. Yes, you heard that correctly… The craziest part of that information is that it is only 1 case among THOUSANDS. The plaintiff was heavily surrounded by the product “Roundup”. Roundup is a product that is both commercially used as well as by everyday homeowners. Unfortunately, the plaintiff was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma as a direct result of being around this product. Granted, he was in very close contact with the product. A good practice while around these products would be to wear a mask, gloves, and make sure the area is very well ventilated. This will drastically decrease your risk of getting affected.
As Monsanto grows, the risk of these issues grows as well. The company was recently purchased, and their product line expanded, but the company has grown significantly in the last 20/30 years in commercial uses. The product is now banned in seven countries and more are jumping on the train. This is very far down the line for the U.S. simply because the company that purchased Monsanto is now putting warning labels on all Roundup products. This might also allow them to get out of any further lawsuits because they weren’t involved in the previous manufacturing of the product.
