A St. Louis-based manufacturer of prepackaged sandwiches has issued a nationwide recall of more than 17,000 cases of sandwiches after testing at the company’s plant in Illinois uncovered listeria, putting consumers at risk of food poisoning. The recall originally affected only 1,751, but the company, Landshire, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration dramatically expanded the effort on Oct. 25.
The recall came after a sample from a sandwich as well as testing on a floor drain near the production line both tested positive for listeria, a food-borne bacteria that can cause serious illness in some cases. The recalled sandwiches, labeled Landshire Nike All-American and Landshire Nike Super Poor Boy, were manufactured between Aug. 25 and Oct. 6 and distributed for sale at convenience stores, wholesalers and supermarkets, the FDA said in a statement.
The sandwiches contained salami, bologna, ham and Swiss cheese on a sesame seed sub-style roll. They were individually wrapped, but the Nike Super Poor Boys were sold in packs of two and eight. The sandwiches had production codes ranging from 11 237 6 through 11 285 6. Anyone who finds those numbers on the side or back of the package or otherwise believes he or she has purchased a contaminated sandwich should return it to the store where he or she bought it for a full refund. Those with questions about the recall may call Landshire at the number provided in the linked article below.
Listeria can cause fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea and muscle stiffness in healthy adults, with symptoms generally lasting no more than a few days. But in children, older adults and those with a weakened immune system, listeria poisoning can be serious and potentially fatal. It can also cause miscarriages in pregnant women. No one has reported become ill due to the Landshire sandwiches.
The sandwiches do not appear to have any connection with the Nike sports apparel company.
