April Showers bring, well… apparently golf ball-sized hail, dirt rain, and tornado sirens. I don’t recall that part of the nursery rhyme.

Spring is a time for renewal. To plant new flowers, you must first clear the old (but not too soon: #savethebees). It’s the season to swap sweaters for sandals—and maybe even start those long-postponed house projects.

I once read that the Spring Equinox is actually the true beginning of the year. It makes sense—animals come out of hibernation, and the extra sunshine gives us a little more motivation to tackle daily tasks or, dare I say, those New Year’s resolutions.

I say all this to remind you: even when the rain keeps pouring, the hail keeps falling, and the wind won’t quit—weather is temporary. Sunshine always returns.

My mother’s birthday falls on the first day of Spring, so this season has always felt like a celebration to me. Daffodils bloom, the world gets greener, and the cake comes out—because my birthday is three weeks after hers, and my daughter’s is three weeks after mine. How much cake is too much cake? Honestly, I don’t want to know.

I love birthdays—especially mine and my daughter’s (though her 5th birthday party is sure to blow my 39th out of the water. Who can compete with a Rainbow Princess Unicorn Party?!).

Each year, I try to reflect on three things I’m proud of and set three goals for the year ahead:

Proud:

  1. Being the best Mom, Wife, Daughter, Sister, Niece, and Aunt (newest title!) I can be.
  2. Taking proactive steps to better myself and my family.
  3. Giving it my all—even when my “all” felt like the bare minimum.
  4. (Bonus!) I finally committed to a skincare routine, and I stuck with it!

Goals:

  1. Ride bike paths with my daughter.
  2. Run a half-marathon.
  3. Focus on the physical me: run, lift, squat, practice mindfulness and yoga. Feel strong.

So, on that note, let’s all take a breath, have a slice of cake, and maybe plant a flower or two. Always bring your umbrella—and don’t forget your allergy meds!
