Recent research indicates that the weed-killer Roundup, from Monsanto, may dramatically increase the chances of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL).
Roundup, Monsanto’s extremely popular weed killer, is marketed as an herbicide that kills weeds but will not harm other plants, like flowers and food crops. It is used both commercially, for farming and landscaping, and residentially, in personal gardens. Monsanto, and Bayer, which purchased the company in 2018, have faced thousands of lawsuits related to the Roundup herbicide. In three cases that have gone to trial, jury verdicts of $289 million, $80 million, and $2 billion have been awarded to plaintiffs.
Does Glyphosate Cause Cancer?
Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, has been classified as “probably carcinogenic to humans” by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which is a part of the World Health Organization (WHO). Scientific studies show a potential link between glyphosate and an increased risk of cancer. End users of Roundup are exposed to its main ingredient, glyphosate, when the herbicide comes into contact with their skin or when it is inhaled.
A recent meta-analysis of existing research indicates a 41% higher lifetime risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma for individuals, such as agricultural workers, who use Roundup or other glyphosates. The state of California has followed the IARC guidance and deemed Roundup as a probably human carcinogen, placing the product on its list of cancer-causing substances.
Despite losing multiple lawsuits, Bayer continues to claim that glyphosate is not a human carcinogen. They cite the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2017 declaration that glyphosate is not likely to cause cancer in humans. While the EPA continues to maintain this position as recently as April of 2019, many people are not convinced. The EPA has been accused of being influenced by Monsanto regarding their position on glyphosate.
What is Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma?
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is one of the most common forms of cancer. NHL is a type of cancer where the lymph-nodes produce lymphocytes (white blood cells) at an uncontrollable rate. These cells can become malignant and invade other systems and tissues of the body. There are two types of lymphocytes: B-Cell and T-Cell lymphocytes. Lymphoma can begin in either of these types, but B-cell lymphomas are the most commonly occurring.
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is the most common type of lymphoma, and North America has the highest rate of NHL in the world. Farmworkers, groundskeepers, and landscapers may be at particular risk because of their frequent use of Monsanto Roundup weed killer.
Common symptoms include:
- swelling of the lymph nodes in the underarms, neck, or groin
- extreme or chronic fatigue
- unexplained weight loss
- persistent headaches
- night sweats
- pain or difficulty when moving
- skin rash
- nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite
- swollen or painful abdomen
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma symptoms overlap with symptoms for many other diseases and illnesses, such as the flu. Lymphoma symptoms, however, do not go away. If you have these symptoms, please talk to your doctor.
Lawsuits against Monsanto and Bayer
In just the last few years, numerous Roundup cases have been filed alleging that Monsanto’s Roundup causes cancer. According to a Reuters report in February 2020, Bayer, which acquired Monsanto in 2018, has lost three jury trials claiming that Roundup’s key ingredient, glyphosate, causes cancer.
In August 2018, a jury in San Francisco Roundup trial awarded $289 million to California school groundskeeper Dewayne Johnson in his case, alleging that Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer caused his cancer. According to a Bloomberg report, this was the first jury award among thousands of pending claims. Mr. Johnson also suffered from non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
In May 2019, a California jury awarded more than $2 billion to Alva and Alberta Pilliod, who claimed that Monsanto’s Roundup caused their non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The couple alleged that the primary ingredient in Roundup, glyphosate, was a probable human carcinogen and that Monsanto failed to provide adequate warning of the cancer risks that could result from using the product. According to the Reuter’s report, this was the largest jury award to date against the company. The award included $2 billion in punitive damages and another $55 million in compensatory damages.
