Study Says Missouri Has Second-Most Dangerous Drivers in U.S.

A website that provides car insurance rates has conducted a survey of which U.S. states have the safest and most dangerous roadways. The results are not good for Missouri residents; the study claims that drivers in the state are the second-worst in the country.
The website collected data on car accident fatalities, tickets for traffic violations, drunk driving and what the man who runs the website calls “careless driving.” Sources included the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the American Motorists Association. Based on the website’s compiled figures, Missouri is the second-most dangerous state in which to drive, beating only Louisiana.
The website owner said that the rates of drunk driving and careless driving were Missouri’s specific downfall.
Numbers do not lie, but ways of interpreting data differ. According to KSDK-TV, different studies have ranked Missouri higher compared with the rest of the country – though not much higher. One study had Missouri as the seventh worst state, while one from 2010 put the state in 36th place.
Some individual drivers agreed that Missouri’s roads have plenty of dangerous drivers who put others at risk of a serious accident, such as distracted drivers using their cell phones while behind the wheel. But others disagreed. A couple said they would have expected Kansas drivers to be ranked lower. One semi truck driver said he had never encountered reckless or dangerous drivers in Missouri, especially compared with New York. Another said conditions here were no worse than other states he’s driven through.
