Blizzard Conditions Hit Central Plains And Missouri

After a relatively easy winter, the central plains including parts of Missouri will be struck by the second major winter storm in less than a week. The storm is expected to bring blizzard conditions to much of the central part of the nation, making travel by road difficult on I-70 heading west from St. Louis. The St. Louis area is expected to miss the brunt of the storm, but could still see some snow and icy roads.
National Weather Service has issued blizzard warnings for a wide area from West Texas through Oklahoma and Kansas. The storm is expected to track across Missouri Monday night with snow and high winds. These types of storms can make travel hazardous and lead to car and truck accidents caused by slippery roads, impaired visibility by blowing and drifting snow. Some highways in West Texas were closed where whiteout conditions and 18 inches of snow left roads impassable.
Kansas Governor Sam Brownback warned that this storm could be more dangerous than last week’s storm, which caused several deadly traffic accidents. He urged people to stay home and off the roads, unless “absolutely critical.”
St. Louis escaped last week’s snow with only minor car accidents and a few jack-knifed semis, but these winter storms can be unpredictable, hitting some areas with heavy snow, while leaving other with only a dusting. If you do have to travel in these conditions, make certain you have a winter survival kit in your vehicle and if conditions become too dangerous, get off the road and sit the storm out.
